At present, Yokohama makes passenger car tires with internal diameters of 13 to 18 inches and tires for sports utility vehicles, and exports some 90 percent of those tires to Europe, the Middle East, and other Southeast Asian countries. The company’s production capacity was expanded to three million tires a year in September 2004 as a result of its second-phase expansion program that began in April 2003.
Yokohama Rubber said it decided to double the expanded capacity to meet increasing demand from its overseas customers wanting high-inch tires with internal diameters of 18 inches and larger.
At the same time, Yokohama Rubber plans to increase sales of SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) tires by introducing new production lines.
According to a press release from Malacañan, Yokohama’s 54,700-square meter plant can produce 9,000 tires per day. Once the expansion project is completed by September next year, the additional 37,500-sq. meter facility will increase tire production to 20,000 tires per day.
The Philippine government expects an increase in hiring of skilled workers in the area from the current 812 employees to 1,312.
With a paid-up capital of P625 million, Yokohama established its foothold in the country in April 1996, but started operations only in January 1998, the statement dated May 5 said.Dennis D.Estopace
